Description: Today’s enterprise is completely dependant on the availability of its business-critical servers and applications. This availability is directly threatened by the numerous vulnerabilities and software patches continuously unveiled by the software vendors. As IT administrators continue to struggle to patch promptly without disruption to availability, the search for alternatives to rapid, unplanned patching continues. There are multiple issues that affect enterprise servers when rapid patching processes are implemented and IT administrators are faced with a dilemma: patch now or patch later. To patch now and close any vulnerabilities is prudent. However, failure to properly test patches prior to deployment dramatically increases the risk that availability will be affected because patches may break applications. This phenomenon reduces the urge to patch now. The frequent release of patches considered “critical” is continually increasing, stretching further already thin IT resources, which also pushes IT administrators toward deferring patching.
