Description: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) ranks “identity theft” as the number one fraud-related complaint received from 1999 through 2004. In fact, more than one-third of the over 500,000 consumer fraud complaints filed with the FTC in 2004 dealt with identity theft. These statistics, coupled with a number of recent high-profile security breaches, have sparked heightened interest in protecting consumer and employee information.
This report touches on several major security incidents that occurred this year and how such incidents leave a corporation's employees and its end consumers vulnerable to identity theft. It also conveys the importance of implementing a security best practices strategy to identify and close the gaps in an organization's environment which may result in a security breach. The risk of exposing sensitive and personal information will undoubtedly remain a concern for many industry leaders, consumers and lawmakers in 2006. Additionally, this report will recap some other significant challenges faced by security professionals throughout 2005.
